“Everybody is a genius. but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid” – – Albert Einstein

Writer Kevin Kelly said, “What you do on your bad days matters more than what you do on your good days.”

The reason is simple: nothing truly worthwhile can be created in a single day. But it’s often the case that we can undo the good work of many days with a single blow—a marriage, family finances, your health, your job, your life.

  • It’s easier to break trust than to build it.
  • It’s easier to fall out of shape than to get back in shape.
  • It’s easier to spend carelessly in a single night than to earn the paycheck of the week.
  • You can be honest with your partner for six days, but dishonesty on the seventh can put you in the category of liars.

It’s an asymmetric disadvantage.

It’s easier to destroy and cause misery with a single moment of irrationality and lack of self-control.

Sometimes, sticking to a good habit when you don’t feel like it is asking a lot. But what isn’t asking too much is simply avoiding actions that destroy your chance to get back up and return to what truly matters to you.

Looking back, I can see moments in my life when, unfortunately, my reaction to frustration was to burn everything down 🙁

I’m sure you, too, have been so overwhelmed by desperation that you thought,

… “TO HELL WITH EVERYTHING.”

That’s exactly where I found myself when I couldn’t see how to make progress or felt completely emotionally unsettled.

For example, I remember being so frustrated with a school essay in middle school that, in a split second, I impulsively deleted all my work. Maybe it was an act of revenge, resentment, or anger, but it was not my present self who paid the price… It is our future self who have to deal with the consequences of such an irrational urge.

The Dalai Lama says, “Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.”

What if we applied the same logic to ourselves on rough days!!

  • If we can’t do anything productive, what if we just avoided creating more misery than necessary?
  • If our family or organization is struggling, what if we made sure not to be an extra obstacle for those trying to make things better?

We all find ourselves exasperated with life from time to time, so it’s dramatically important never to do anything too damaging to repair:

Never risk wiping out your family’s finances, no matter how promising the upside!

Similarly, if you’ve been lucky enough never to pay the price for repeatedly doing something reckless, don’t bet you’ll always get away with it.

Like driving drunk without having an accident—thinking it’s proof of how well you drive!

The only way to secure constant and never-ending improvement is to avoid putting yourself in danger of being permanently taken out of the game you’re playing.
